Stiffed nose, chronic rhinitis, repeated middle ear infections, snoring, hearing impairment. These common problems make our children’s lives troublesome. No adults less so the kids like to undergo surgical ENT procedures. Are there any more comfortable approaches how to solve such a problem. Vaclav Pavelec, MD, PhD answers following questions.
What do enlarged adenoids cause?
Children most commonly snore or/and have blocked nose. Sometimes they suffer from sleep apnea, middle ear inflammations or hearing loss. Adenoids closes the path form nose to pharyngs and also push on the openings of Eustachian tubes that aerate middle ear.
When is there a must of adenoidectomy?
Adenoidectomy is indicated in children older then 2 years and in above mentioned situations. If we did not remove the adenoids it could lead either to severe hearing impairment or inappropriate jaw growth. Immune function of adenoids is minor contrary of tonsils.
What are the possibilities of treatment?
Either adenoids can be removed wit knife or curette or at our clinic with laser.
Would you describe the laser procedure?
Parents accompany their kid in the morning tour facility. They can be present at the treatre. Under endoscopic control we vaporise adenoids with laser. Procedure takes couple of minutes and 3 hours after surgery children usually goes home.
Laser. Why?
Laser adenoidectomy has lower occurrence of post op bleeding and enables quicker recovery in comparison with classical cold steel techniques.
Also we can use laser in so called laser assisted myringotomy. This easy procedure restores hearing in large numbers of our patients.
